Sensex, Nifty extend gains as metal stocks rally

Mumbai, Dec 12 ( LatestNewsX ) – Indian equities posted a second‑day rise, buoyed by a robust global rally and a surge in metal titles. The mood sharpened after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, both leaders eyeing a trade deal that should tighten economic bonds.

By the close, the Sensex was up 449.53 points, a 0.53 % gain, settling at 85,267.66. The Nifty echoed the trend, adding 148.40 points (0.57 %) to 26,046.95.

Analysts said the index is likely to stay on a positive path as long as it remains above 25,900, a level seen as key support. In the near term, a move toward 26,300 looks possible.

Gains were led on the Nifty by heavyweight names such as Tata Steel, Eternal, UltraTech Cement, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Axis Bank and Bajaj Finance. Conversely, profit taking pressured several names, with HUL, Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, ITC, Power Grid and HCL Tech among the top losers.

Across the market, the Nifty MidCap index climbed 1.18 %, while the Nifty SmallCap index pushed 0.94 %. The metal sector dominated the rally, jumping 2.63 %, followed by realty, consumer durables and oil & gas. FMCG and media shares slipped.

Meanwhile, Indian silver maintained a sharp climb, with futures surpassing the Rs 2 lakh per kilogram threshold for the first time on Friday – a move that has lifted the metal nearly 130 % year‑to‑date.

Experts pointed out that a confluence of global cues, strong sectoral momentum and improving geopolitical ties helped steer the markets toward a positive finish for the week.
