A Chinese doctoral student at the University of Southern California is accused of drugging, tying up and sexually assaulting three women between 2021 and 2024. Prosecutors say the man, 30‑year‑old Sizhe Wang, slipped a sedative into the victims’ drinks, injected them with medication through a syringe and a tube, and then forced them into “sexually explicit” positions while taking photographs.
Wang, an electrical‑engineering Ph.D. candidate, was arrested on August 28. Since his arrest, investigative teams have recorded him saying he would return to China if he receives bail. With no extradition treaty between the U.S. and China, the suspect could escape U.S. law if he leaves before the case is resolved.
Three victims, three terrifying encounters
- Jane Doe 1 – a childhood friend who traveled with Wang to San Diego in December 2021. In a bar, Wang added crushed benzodiazepine pills to her drink. Later, he injected her with the anesthetic midazolam anally, tied her with leather straps and raped her. Photos taken during the assault showed her bound, with a plastic dental device in her mouth, and in various vulnerable poses.
- Jane Doe 2 – a friend who flew from China to study in the U.S. Wang drugged, raped and posed her in a similar manner, according to the prosecutor’s motion.
- Jane Doe 3 – a classmate in Wang’s doctoral program who he also drugged and assaulted. Details of this attack mirror the others, with the victim tied and photographed.
Law enforcement believes there may be additional victims who do not yet know what happened. LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters, “We are looking at patterns of activity and have evidence that suggests there could be more victims.”
Evidence found
During the investigation, police found:
- A bottle of medication containing midazolam, the same drug used in the attacks.
- Stainless‑steel syringes, red tubing, leather straps and a dental mouth device that Wang reportedly used.
- Pinhole cameras and other electronic devices that may hold more pictures or videos of the crimes.
Wang co‑authored at least two dozen academic papers and worked in the lab of USC professor Stephen Cronin, one of the university’s top engineering researchers.
Current legal status
Wang faces charges of rape, sodomy and sexual penetration using a controlled substance. He pleaded not guilty and the case is pending.
This case has sparked concerns over safety in university research labs and the handling of criminal suspects who may leave the country before trial. It also highlights the serious risks of drug‑assisted sexual violence.
