Union Minister‑turned‑party chief Chirag Paswan wrote to Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday asking for a top‑level probe into the death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who is alleged to have taken his own life. The request was posted on the party’s X account, where Paswan urged the state government to investigate the “forced suicide” of Dalit officer Puran Kumar.
The incident has sparked anger across political lines. Haryana’s Minister of State for Social Justice, Krishan Kumar Bedi, called the death a “tragic loss,” while Punjab’s Finance Minister and AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema demanded an independent judicial inquiry. Cheema highlighted a growing pattern of caste‑based harassment against Dalits under the BJP‑ruled government, noting that a senior IPS officer’s suicide is just one example.
AP senior leader Arvind Kejriwal also expressed deep sorrow, saying the officer “faced so much harassment due to his caste that he took his own life.” Kejriwal called for strict punishment of those involved.
On October 7, Y Puran Kumar, an IPS officer based in Haryana, was found dead with a gunshot wound in Chandigarh. His wife, Senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has accused Haryana’s Director General of Police Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia of caste‑based discrimination, mental harassment, and humiliation. She filed a written complaint with police, demanding an FIR be registered against the senior officers. In her claim, Puran Kumar left a suicide note that blamed his death on the harassment he allegedly faced from higher‑ranking officers.
The call for a thorough investigation comes amid widespread calls for transparency and accountability in Haryana’s law‑enforcement agencies. The Indian National Congress, AAP, and other opposition parties emphasize the need for an impartial probe into Puran Kumar’s death. The outcome of the request to the Haryana CM and any resulting investigation will be closely watched by governments and civil‑society groups alike.
