US condemns killing of Hindu worker, urges Bangladesh to protect minorities

U.S. Condemns Religious Violence in Bangladesh; Lawmakers Urge Strong Rebuke

Washington – The U.S. State Department today issued a sharp rebuke of the wave of religious attacks sweeping Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters, the department emphasized that the United States upholds freedom of religion, expression, and peaceful assembly, and that it strongly condemns violence in any form. The spokesperson also welcomed steps taken by Bangladesh’s interim government to protect all communities.

The condemnation came after the brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27‑year‑old Hindu garment worker from Bhaluka, who was beaten to death by a mob on December 18 and then burned. Authorities say the attack followed rumors that Das had committed blasphemy. His death has spurred widespread concerns among U.S. officials and advocacy groups about a growing pattern of mob violence, vandalism, and intimidation against minorities in the country.

U.S. lawmakers added their voices to the call for condemnation. Congressman Ro Khanna described the killing as “horrific” and urged that religious hatred be met with unequivocal rebuke. In a statement on X, Khanna offered his thoughts and prayers to Das’s friends and family, calling for a firm stand against “vile acts of hatred and bigotry.”

Washington’s diplomatic message reinforces long‑standing U.S. policy that religious freedom and minority protection are central to its foreign‑policy agenda. While the State Department did not detail ongoing diplomatic discussions, it made clear that the U.S. will continue to raise these concerns as part of its global human‑rights reporting and bilateral engagement, particularly in South Asia where communal tensions persist.

The U.S. remains closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of all religious groups is critical to the country’s stability and the broader regional peace.
