Kane Williamson praised New Zealand’s 0‑3 whitewash of India in Mumbai as one of the team’s biggest moments. Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Ratings Awards on Tuesday, the 35‑year‑old Aussie‑born batter reflected on the historic series and the country’s future in Test cricket.
Last year, New Zealand shocked the cricket world by ending India’s 12‑year home‑winning streak with a 0‑3 clean sweep. Spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner out‑played India’s bowlers, while the Kiwis smashed the hosts for just 46 runs in the opening Test in Bengaluru. The win forced India’s stars – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin – out of the final two series in the Border‑Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, a retirement‑type run for the legends.
“We played in a country that loves cricket as much as anywhere else,” Williamson said. “Bringing the Game to India and dominating all three Tests was incredible. It’s probably the greatest achievement for a New Zealand team.” He added that the victory sits close in importance to the ICC World Test Championship Final, where New Zealand just earned a historic win over India.
Despite missing the series due to injury, Williamson still loves the sport. He’s no longer on New Zealand’s central contract and balances family time, international duty and T20 leagues. “Every chance to represent New Zealand is special,” he said. “We’re about to have a busy schedule and I’m excited for the future.”
Williamson highlighted the need to protect Test cricket. He wants a stronger focus on the long format and warned about a proposed two‑tier system. “We need to give lower‑ranked teams a clear path up,” he explained. “The Test Championship has added more result‑driven matches and gives teams a context.”
He is also against the idea of two‑match Test series, which New Zealand often plays at home. “Longer series are ideal, but many boards struggle to host them for commercial reasons,” Williamson noted. “We want more Test opportunities for all countries, but it’s a complex conversation.”
The comments come as the New Zealand side plans to turn the momentum from the Mumbai series into future successes. Their 0‑3 whitewash remains a headline‑making moment and a reminder that strong spin, disciplined batting and a winning attitude can take a team far.
