Winter storm hits US, snarls thousands of flights

New York, Dec. 28 (IANS) – A heavy winter storm swept through the U.S. Northeast and Great Lakes from Friday evening into Saturday, bringing large amounts of snow, crippling holiday travel, and leaving many people without electricity.

By 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, FlightAware data showed that more than 5,580 U.S. flights were delayed and at least 860 had been canceled. The chaos was especially pronounced at three major airports in the New York metropolitan area. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, flights bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport suffered an average delay of about two hours that morning.

The storm prompted severe‑weather alerts stretching from New York to Philadelphia, with officials urging residents and travelers to exercise caution.

It arrived just before the busiest travel day of the holiday season. The Transportation Security Administration projected that 2.86 million travelers would fly on Sunday, a day that would have been severely affected by the storm’s impacts on travel schedules.

In the lead‑up to the winter storm, governors of New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency, advising the public to stay informed about weather conditions, monitor road closures, and follow safety procedures.

Across Michigan, excessive ice on trees and power lines left more than 30,000 homes and businesses without electricity on Saturday morning.
