In a bold crackdown on drug smuggling, Assam Rifles troops in Mizoram seized a whopping 2.462 kg of heroin worth around Rs 20.10 crore. This major bust happened in Champhai district, right along the border with Myanmar, as part of a high-stakes anti-narcotics operation.
Here’s how it went down: On Tuesday, acting on solid intelligence about heroin trafficking, the troops launched a raid near Thingluang Kai on Melbuk Road. They spotted one suspect wading across the Tiau River, with another waiting on the Myanmar side. As the smugglers fled back into Myanmar, the quick-thinking Assam Rifles team swooped in and grabbed the abandoned consignment. The seized heroin and the vehicle involved are now with Zokhawthar police for deeper investigation. Talk about a narrow escape for the traffickers!
This haul marks the biggest drug seizure in Mizoram since the state kicked off a four-month anti-drug campaign on September 1. The drive aims to stamp out the illegal drug trade and its dangers, running all the way to December 31. Mizoram’s Inspector General of Police, H. Ramthlengliana, shared that cops, other enforcement agencies, the Young Mizo Association (YMA), and village leaders are teaming up to target drug hotspots in all 11 districts, especially border areas.
What’s special? Mizoram is leading the way among Northeast India’s eight states with this massive anti-drug operation to wipe out narcotics menace. The state shares a porous 510 km unfenced border with Myanmar across districts like Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Smugglers often push heroin, addictive methamphetamine tablets, exotic animals, and other contraband through here, then ship them to other parts of India, Bangladesh, and beyond via Assam and Tripura.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has called drug abuse the state’s top threat, pointing to its spot near the infamous Golden Triangle—a hotspot for global drug trafficking. He urged everyone to join hands against drugs, smuggling, and the spread of HIV/AIDS, saying it’s a fight for people’s health and spirit. To beef up security, the government is even recruiting for a new Mizo Territorial Army battalion to tackle drug trafficking and law-and-order issues head-on.
This latest heroin seizure in Mizoram highlights the ongoing battle against narcotics smuggling along the India-Myanmar border, showing how coordinated efforts can disrupt these dangerous networks.
