Menstrual leave officially notified by Karnataka government

Bengaluru – Karnataka has rolled out a new one‑day paid menstrual leave for women workers every month. The move, announced by the state’s Congress‑led government, covers employees in any establishment that falls under Karnataka’s labour laws.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah signed off on the policy, called the Menstrual Leave Policy – 2025, after a cabinet approval earlier this week. The policy is part of the government’s growing list of welfare programmes aimed at boosting women’s health, safety and empowerment at work.

Labour Minister Santosh S. Lad said the order protects the physical and mental health of women employees. “This is a historic step for women’s empowerment and a model the rest of the country can follow,” he told reporters. He thanked CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and cabinet colleagues for helping turn the idea into reality.

The Labour Department had first asked for administrative approval. Minister Lad pushed for a thorough approach, holding multiple meetings and consultations before the policy was ready for implementation. An 18‑member committee, led by Professor Sapna S. of Christ University’s law department, reviewed the issue and produced a report that highlighted menstrual health as a key aspect of workplace rights. The committee’s findings helped the cabinet give final approval.

Before launching the scheme, the ministry reviewed how other Indian states and countries handle menstrual leave, ensuring Karnataka’s version was both effective and fair. Women across the state have welcomed the policy, with many saying it will make a real difference in their lives and in their families’ well‑being.

The new rule allows a single paid day of leave each month for women employees who experience menstruation, giving them time to rest without financial loss. Karnataka’s initiative sets a benchmark for other states looking to support women workers.
