On Friday, Delhi lawmakers gathered inside the Legislative Assembly to mark the 150th anniversary of the iconic anthem “Vande Mataram.” Speaker Vijender Gupta opened the celebration by stressing how the song still unites all Indians.
Gupta told the crowd, “Vande Mataram is a timeless anthem that binds every Indian to the spirit of our motherland.” The speakers were the same verse that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote in 1875, a sharp reminder of resistance against British rule.
During the ceremony, a new plaque was unveiled in the Assembly hall. It bears the full text of the song and will stand as a permanent reminder of the anthem’s role in India’s fight for freedom. Later in the evening, the Assembly building itself lit up in India’s tricolour, a vivid symbol of the nation’s unity and pride.
Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, MLAs Sanjay Goyal, Karnail Singh, Anil Goyal, and Chandan Kumar Choudhary also took part in the event. They reflected on how “Vande Mataram” first echoed in public at the 1896 Congress session when Rabindranath Tagore sang it, and how it later spread across the country during the 1905 Bengal partition.
Speaker Gupta highlighted vivid images from the hymn—three idols of Bharat Mata, one divine, one in distress, the other destined to rise again—symbolising India’s journey from oppression to resurgence. He cited revolutionary moments, from Bhagat Singh’s courtroom cry of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” to Madam Bhikaji Cama’s unfurling of the tricolour in Berlin with the words “Vande Mataram” on it.
He said the anthem transcends politics, religion, and region. “It belongs to 140 crore Indians, symbolising our collective spirit, unity, and pride,” he said.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly remains illuminated today for a year‑long “150 Years of Vande Mataram” commemoration. Speaker Gupta encouraged every citizen to join the celebration, pledging unity and devotion to the nation.
