Over 50 lakh employees, 69 lakh pensioners to benefit from 8th Pay Commission: Govt

New Delhi – 8 Dec (LatestNewsX) – At a sit‑in in Parliament on Monday, it was disclosed that more than 50 million civil‑service staff and close to 69 million retirees will benefit from the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC). Presently, the government employs 50.14 lakh officials and oversees pensions for approximately 69 lakh former employees; all of them fall under the forthcoming pay review initiative.

Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, responded in writing to questions from Lok Sabha members about when the CPC’s recommendations would be implemented, the scope of its terms of reference, and the budgetary allocation for the scheme in the 2026‑27 fiscal year. He reassured the house that the government will set the effective date, while the Commission must submit its findings within 18 months of its formation.

Further, the minister promised that the state would earmark the necessary funds once the proposals are vetted and approved. “The government will make appropriate provision of funds for implementing the accepted recommendations of the 8th CPC. It will devise methodology and procedure for formulating its recommendations,” Chaudhary recorded.

The Finance Ministry has already explained that the 8th CPC will examine and propose changes to pay scales, allowances, pensions, and other service conditions. This follows earlier clarifications given in response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha by Javed Ali Khan and Ramji Lal Suman, who asked whether the Centre intended to revise pensions or merge the existing Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) into basic pay for instant relief to staff and retirees.

Chaudhary had previously indicated that all such matters fall within the remit of the newly constituted 8th CPC, which was formally established by a government resolution on 3 November and accompanied by detailed Terms of Reference.
