India’s stealth frigate INS Sahyadri docked in the Malaysian port of Kemaman from October 2‑5, marking a key stop on its Eastern Fleet deployment to the South China Sea and the wider Indo‑Pacific region. The visit gave India and Malaysia a chance to deepen their naval ties and keep friendly ties alive.
At Kemaman, Indian and Malaysian sailors crossed decks to share expertise and discuss joint interests. The crews even played a friendly football match, highlighting the friendly spirit that ships bring to port. INS Sahyadri also held a yoga session and a charity event for locals, showcasing the Indian Navy’s commitment to wellness, compassion and service.
The commanding officer met First Admiral Abd Halim bin Kamarudin, Deputy Commander of Naval Region 1 at Kuantan Naval Base, underscoring the high‑level cooperation between the two navies. The visit was a reminder of the long‑standing defense partnership that began with a 1993 MoU on Defence Cooperation between India and Malaysia.
INS Sahyadri’s stop in Kemaman is its third visit to Malaysia. The ship first called at Port Klang on a goodwill mission in 2016 and later joined the Exercise Samudra Laksamana drill in Kota Kinabalu in 2019. Each encounter adds to a growing record of joint exercises and friendly exchanges that strengthen regional security links.
