“Tamil Nadu govt, police acting with such negligence”: BJP’s Annamalai on Karur stampede

In the tragic Karur stampede during actor and TVK chief Vijay’s public rally in Tamil Nadu, at least 31 people lost their lives, and 58 others suffered injuries on Saturday evening. Officials point to overcrowding at the venue as the main cause, with many attendees fainting and rushing to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

BJP leader K Annamalai slammed the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for negligence in handling the event’s security. “This shocking incident, where around 40 people, including children, died in the stampede at Vijay’s gathering, is heartbreaking,” Annamalai wrote on X. He sent his deepest condolences to the grieving families and called on the state to provide top-notch medical treatment for everyone hurt.

Annamalai didn’t hold back on his criticism. He accused the police of failing to estimate the crowd size properly, pick a safe venue, or deploy enough officers to protect attendees. Reports of a power outage during the rally only added to the chaos, he said, labeling the government’s oversight as “highly condemnable.” He also highlighted what he sees as a pattern: the DMK deploys full police forces for their own events but skimps on security for opposition rallies.

The BJP leader demanded immediate compensation for the victims’ families, a full probe into the lapses—like poor security and the electricity cut—and tough action against those responsible.

On the government’s side, DMK leader and former minister Senthil Balaji rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Chief Minister MK Stalin’s orders. “The CM checked in right away after the stampede and sent us—the district collector, SP, and me—to the hospital. We called in extra doctors for proper care,” Balaji told reporters. He noted that 46 injured people are in private hospitals, with 12 in the government one, and stressed that private facilities won’t charge victims for treatment. Stalin plans to visit Karur on Sunday to meet the affected families and check on the situation firsthand.

Tamil Nadu’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Davidson Devaraj, told that the death toll could climb above 30. “I’m heading to Karur now to inspect the site,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in, offering his deepest condolences for the lives lost in the Tamil Nadu rally stampede and wishing a quick recovery to all the injured.
