In West Bengal, the BJP’s state unit has issued a warning to all booth‑level agents (BLAs) as the party prepares for a Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists. The message stresses extra vigilance in constituencies that have seen dramatic rises in registered voters since 2011, the year the Left Front’s 34‑year rule ended and the Trinamool Congress took power.
A senior BJP committee member told reporters that BLAs will be on high alert for areas where voter numbers have jumped more than 40 percent over the past decade. While a 20‑25 percent increase is normal when you account for population growth and the voter‑to‑population ratio, a spike above 40 percent is “inconceivable.” In some parts of North 24 Parganas, the increase has exceeded 70 percent, sparking the party’s concern.
The party’s state unit has already mapped out these problematic constituencies and supplied BLAs with detailed lists before the SIR starts. During the review, BLAs will train to work closely with state electoral officers. Their job is to spot and flag any bogus, deceased or duplicate names on the voter rolls.
“If any irregularity appears during the review, BLAs must immediately report it to the party’s state committee and also the higher district electoral authorities,” the committee member added. “The state committee will forward any such concerns to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal.”
The emphasis is on transparency and integrity. By keeping an eye on the most volatile districts, the BJP aims to ensure that the voter list reflects the true electorate and that the upcoming elections proceed fairly. This move comes as the party prepares for the next phase of electoral scrutiny and as West Bengal approaches the next election cycle.
