On Dec 9 in Dhaka (LatestNewsX), a BNP representative declared that Bangladesh was facing an “abnormal” era—an era marked by the “absence” of democracy and accountable governance, information echoed by local media.
During the closing session of the party’s two‑day conference in Dhaka, acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman warned that covert schemes were being mobilised to undermine the democratic process.
Rahman shouted, “Why is the share market crashing? This is abnormal. Bank after bank is closing down, shutting down, collapsing. This is abnormal. These abnormal things cannot continue,” according to the daily The Daily Star’s coverage.
He also noted, “Every day, when we open newspapers, we see attempts to hide the truth. But hunger speaks the truth. Empty pockets speak the truth.”
Rahman listed a slew of distressing signs: factories and mills shutting down, stalled investments, hospitals unable to offer adequate care, and schools struggling to keep classes running—each a hallmark of an “abnormal” situation.
He added that many now feel unsafe leaving their homes, fearing robbery, and even if they escape that danger, frequent road crashes mean nobody can be sure they’ll return safely.
“More than 7,000 people were killed in road accidents last year. What happened to the families who lost their only breadwinner? Does anyone think about them the next day?” he queried.
Rahman cautioned that the situation would worsen, describing a “dangerous” campaign aimed at vilifying everyone except one faction.
Senior BNP figure Salahuddin Ahmed, speaking at the same event, indirectly jabbed at the radical Islamist party Jamaat‑e‑Islami, saying that the nation had already exposed a group that attempts to mislead people by playing the “religion card.”
He went on to say, “People have identified a party that has no policy, no ideals, and no plan, and is trying to deceive the public in the name of religion. Their real faces have already been exposed.”
Bangladesh remains on the brink of escalating political turbulence as the country heads toward next year’s elections.
Earlier allies of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, who helped oust the democratically elected Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, now find themselves at odds over the impending contest.
