PM Modi and President Ramaphosa set to bolster India-South Africa partnership during G20 Summit: Envoy

New Delhi, Nov 15 – South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to meet next week in Johannesburg. The talks will take place amid the Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit, which runs from November 22‑23 in South Africa’s largest city.
The two leaders will review the current state of their relationship and look ahead to new possibilities for cooperation. Key topics on the agenda include security collaboration, increased people‑to‑people contact, trade and investment opportunities, and cultural ties such as sports and creative arts.
High Commissioner for South Africa in India, Anil Sooklal, told that India has been a longtime supporter of South Africa’s struggle against apartheid and remains the country’s third‑largest trading partner. “Our partnership is built on a deep history and a strong multilateral foundation,” he said. “We will look for ways to deepen security cooperation, trade, and cultural exchange.”
Both countries are proud of their shared journey from colonial exploitation to becoming leading nations of the Global South. They cooperate within BRICS, the IBSA forum (India‑Brazil‑South Africa), and other global institutions like the WTO and the UN. The upcoming G20 summit also offers a platform for broader climate‑change discussions and multilateral dialogue.
President Ramaphosa told a press conference in Kliptown that South Africa is ready to host world leaders and deliver a successful G20 meeting. With most G20 leaders already confirmed to attend, the summit is shaping up to be a key moment for India‑South Africa ties and the wider Global South community.
