On December 1, police in Kolkata reported that a 45‑year‑old man has been taken into custody in West Midnapore following accusations of raping a 10‑year‑old girl. The suspect first appeared before a POCSO court in Midnapore, where the judge ordered him to spend two days in police custody.
The incident is said to have occurred Sunday morning. While the girl’s parents were out working, she went to a roadside tube well to fetch water. The man, who lived next door and was known to the child as “Jethu,” allegedly approached her at that time and assaulted her when no one was home. When the girl returned and found her mother looking worried after seeing her lying on the bed, she broke down and recounted what had happened. A neighbour also told the mother that she had seen the suspect bring the child into his house.
Prompted by the accusations, the mother filed a written complaint at Narayangarh police station, leading to the suspect’s arrest that evening. A senior officer of the West Midnapore district police later confirmed that the suspect had been brought before the district court, that police custody was requested, and that the POCSO judge had directed a two‑day interrogation.
The local community reacted with shock and anger, demanding a severe penalty for the accused, especially after learning that the victim had referred to him as an uncle.
