Jennifer Lawrence reveals why Elizabeth Banks got ‘really annoyed’ with her on ‘Hunger Games’ set
Picture Katniss Everdeen and Effie Trinket as two very different people on set – they didn’t always get along. During the shoot of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in 2013, Jennifer Lawrence told a recent interview with Leonardo DiCaprio that Elizabeth Banks had gotten “really annoyed” with her.
“I once took an Ambien in the morning, thinking it was something else,” Lawrence, 35, explained to the Hollywood actor, while they were discussing their careers on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series.
The scene in question was a dance with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the second “Hunger Games” film, and the mix‑up resulted in some tension. “I was hallucinating. Elizabeth Banks got really annoyed with me. Maybe she didn’t know that I was on an Ambien,” she added.
The two worked together across all four installments – starting with the 2012 debut and wrapping up with “Mockingjay – Part 2” in 2015. Katherine “Katniss” Everdeen was portrayed by Lawrence, while Banks played Effie Trinket; the rest of the cast included Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, Liam Hemusworth as Gale, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch, and Donald Sutherland as President Snow.
Hoffman, who passed away at 46 in 2014, later voiced Plutarch Heavensbee.
However, the Ambien episode was not the only time Lawrence accidentally swapped her pills. She shared another story about mistakenly taking a stimulant instead of a sleep aid.
“During ‘Red Sparrow,’ I took an Adderall instead of a sleeping pill, and then I didn’t sleep all night,” she reminded DiCaprio. “I was taking hot showers in a panic.” She stressed that she can’t function without rest. “And then I had to say the phrase ‘Senate Armed Services Committee’ in a Russian accent. That sucked.”
DiCaprio revealed that he hasn’t watched “Titanic” since he starred in the 1997 film with Kate Winslet. “No. I haven’t seen it before,” he said to Lawrence. “I don’t really watch my films, do you?”
The actor also addressed rumors that he passed on Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights” because of scheduling conflicts with “Titanic.” Mark Wahlberg ended up taking the lead role.
“We almost did ‘Boogie Nights’ together, and then I got to watch his entire career progress over the last 25 years and see this incredible visionary,” DiCaprio said of Anderson. “It was a hybrid of that. ‘Titanic’ and ‘Boogie Nights’ kind of overlapped in production,” he added. “Maybe it could have worked out.”
He had previously expressed a deep regret over not participating in that film. “I’ll say it even though you’re here: My biggest regret is not doing ‘Boogie Nights,’” he told Anderson during an interview. “It was a profound movie of my generation. I can’t imagine anyone but Mark in it.”
