UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly backs reforms to the United Nations Security Council, aiming to update it for today’s world in 2025 instead of sticking to its 1945 setup. A top UN spokesperson highlighted India’s growing influence in global talks during the UN General Assembly.
Stephane Dujarric, the UN’s main spokesperson, shared these views with reporters on the sidelines of the assembly in New York on Monday. He stressed India’s key role in the UN and the push for changes to make the organization work better and represent modern realities.
“The Secretary-General fully supports reforming the Security Council to mirror the world of 2025, not 1945,” Dujarric said. But he added that member countries will decide who gets permanent seats on the revamped council.
Reform tops the agenda this year, Dujarric explained. The goal is to make the UN quicker, more effective for everyday people, and truly reflective of global shifts since World War II.
Dujarric had high praise for India. “India plays a vital role in the UN system,” he noted. “It’s a strong backer of multilateralism, and the Secretary-General enjoys great ties with the Indian government. We have many talented Indian staff here, and India brings a powerful voice to UN discussions.”
India has long championed its bid for a permanent UN Security Council seat. Last year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told India’s upper house of parliament that securing this spot is a top priority. He said India stays active in bilateral and global efforts, confident that its track record qualifies it for a reformed council that matches today’s world.
On another front, Dujarric addressed rising tariffs and trade barriers among big economies and their fallout for countries like India. The UN worries about growing protectionism, he said, warning that “in a trade war, there are no winners.” These moves threaten global economic stability and growth, especially for developing nations.
This year’s UN General Assembly packs a busy schedule. It marks the UN’s 80th anniversary, features Guterres’ Climate Ambition Summit, and celebrates 30 years since the Beijing Declaration on women’s rights.
