Mumbai – Actor Vijay Varma told reporters at the Jagran Film Festival that the most memorable compliment he’s ever received came from fellow actor Pankaj Tripathi.
Varma, who’s known for his gruff look in shows like Gully Boy, Mirzapur and Dahaad, said Tripathi’s praise landed harder than any other comment. “I was never in Bihar and I never had any Bihari friends," Varma explained. “So I spent three months listening to interviews with Pankaj and others to learn their accents and everyday speech.”
The comedian‑turned‑actor grew up idolising tough‑guy legends such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Naseer Sir, Marlon Brando and Dilip Kumar. “Those characters always had a dark side, and that was what hooked me,” he said. “When you see a broken piece, the audience gets curious and can step inside that depth.”
Varma sees his success partly because he links parts of his mind with the audience’s reaction. “Right after a release I get a sense of how people feel about the role, and then I sink into the next project for a few months. It’s almost a cycle of being out of touch with myself and then returning to connect again.”
Fans can look forward to seeing Varma return to the screen in Gustaakh Ishq, which debuts on 28 November. The film features veteran Naseeruddin Shah and rising star Fatima Sana Shaikh.
