In Mumbai on Sunday, news turned to the political scene after Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, compared the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to the Taliban. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam called for an immediate retraction and a public apology, saying the RSS is a cultural group, not a military force.
Nirupam told reporters that the RSS promotes Hindutva, the core of Indian culture, and that the Taliban comparison was an attempt to defame the organisation. “He must pull back the statement and apologise,” the veteran politician added.
He also spoke on two other hot topics. First, the Rs 60‑crore fraud case involving Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty’s husband, Raj Kundra. Nirupam said police investigations are sharp, and claims of embezzlement should be thoroughly examined. Justice, if proven, should be served.
Second, he responded to Congress leader P. Chidambaram’s remark that the 1984 Operation Blue Star was a mistake. “Calling it a mistake is unacceptable,” Nirupam said. “The operation was necessary to remove the terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.” He urged the Congress party to clarify its position, warning that internal disagreements could damage the party’s reputation.
During the same interview, Nirupam weighed in on a recent meeting between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray’s family in Mumbai. He described it as a private family lunch with no political clout and warned that the MNS, known for targeting North Indians, joining the Maha Vikas Aghadi could hurt Congress’s image if the party does not clearly oppose such alliances.
The controversy over the RSS comparison continues to stir debate across Karnataka, Mumbai, and beyond.
