Ahmedabad – Dec. 7 (LatestNewsX) – Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, paid a visit to the newly upgraded Gandhi Ashram site on Sunday to gauge how the redevelopment is progressing, officials said. During the stop, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust briefed him on the various phases of the project. The deputy chief minister reviewed the reports, checked the current state of the site, and provided guidance where needed. He then toured key areas of the revamped complex, such as Das Aurdi, Rangshala, Somnath Chhatralay, Vanak Parivar Chali, Ashramshala, Kutumb Niwas, the old kitchen, Cheemanbhai Family Residence, Imam Manzil, Anand Bhavan Museum, Gaushala, Teachers’ Quarters, Udyog Mandir, Manav Sadhana, Balmandir, and also the newly built amenities including vehicle parking, a cafeteria, a souvenir shop and the “Mohan to Mahatma” section. The review gathered I.P. Gautam, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram Memorial Trust; I.K. Patel, Officer on Special Duty of the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust; senior trustees of the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust; municipal officers; and other departmental representatives. The Gandhi Ashram in Gujarat remains a pivotal landmark in the country’s struggle for independence, having served as the hub where Mahatma Gandhi lived, worked, and shaped many of his core teachings. Established in 1917 on the Sabarmati’s banks, the ashram was the headquarters for a number of defining movements – the Non‑Cooperation, Khadi, and Harijan campaigns – and the launch pad of the 1930 Dandi March that sparked widespread civil disobedience against British rule. It was more than a home; it was a community experimenting with Gandhi’s ideals of non‑violence, self‑reliance, simplicity, and shared living. Over the decades, the site has come to symbolize moral resistance and has been central to political strategy, social reform, and national mobilization, leaving a lasting mark on India’s journey to independence. janvi/khz
