Calcutta HC dismisses petition by TET-qualified candidates to relax age limit to appear for fresh recruitment

Kolkata, Nov 25 (LatestNewsX) — The Calcutta High Court dismissed a petition filed by candidates who had passed the 2022 Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). They had asked the court to lower the age limit for the 2025 recruitment so they could apply.

Justice Biswajit Basu, sitting alone, rejected the appeal. The petitioners say they will seek review at a division bench.

Their request came after the board opened a new round of hiring for primary‑school teachers in state schools. The lawyers—Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and Bikram Banerjee—cited a similar case involving 2017 TET candidates, where the court had allowed an age relaxation after the applicants challenged a 2016 rule.

They argue the same relief should be granted this time. TET is a mandatory requirement for primary‑school teaching positions.

The West Bengal Primary Education Board reminded that the 2017 applicants gained the relaxation by contesting the board’s 2016 regulation, and that this rule cannot be altered now.

After hearing both sides, the judge dismissed the petition.

The appeal surfaced after the board began accepting online applications for fresh recruitment on Nov 19, marking the first full hiring drive in eight years.

This recruitment is happening while the High Court awaits a decision on alleged irregularities in the hiring of around 32,000 primary teachers last year—a case that may be decided any day.

The recruitment notice was released in September. The board announced 13,421 vacancies. Qualified TET candidates may now apply online for assistant‑teacher posts in government‑approved, government‑sponsored primary and junior schools.
