Cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli leaves 5 missing, washes away six houses

Uttarakhand Cloudburst: 5 Missing in Chamoli After Heavy Rains Destroy Homes
In a shocking turn of events, heavy rains triggered a massive cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, leaving at least five people missing and causing widespread destruction. The incident hit Nanda Nagar late Wednesday night, turning the area into a nightmare as torrential downpours unleashed a huge debris flow.
The force of the water and mud demolished six buildings, burying everything in its path. Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Public Works Department rushed to the scene. They brought in JCB machines and other heavy equipment to dig through the rubble and help those trapped.
Good news amid the chaos: two people were rescued alive from the debris. But search operations for the missing continue non-stop, even as relentless rain and tough mountain terrain make things incredibly difficult. A medical team with three ambulances arrived quickly to provide urgent care.
Locals say several residents might still be stuck inside their collapsed homes. Authorities are working around the clock to find them, but the risk of more landslides hangs heavy over the area. The weather department warns of even heavier rainfall in Chamoli over the next few days, urging everyone to stay alert.
This disaster comes just four days after a deadly cloudburst in Dehradun’s Sahastradhara area. That one claimed at least 13 lives, washed away roads, wrecked shops and houses, and destroyed two key bridges. It also cut off vital routes connecting Dehradun to nearby regions.
The Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun took a severe hit too. Swollen by the rains, the Tamsa River flooded the temple grounds, dumping feet of sand and debris everywhere. The sacred Shivling got submerged, and walls cracked badly from the impact.
With the monsoon fury showing no signs of slowing, Uttarakhand’s state government has sounded a red alert for several districts, including Dehradun, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, and Chamoli. Officials warn of extremely heavy rainfall, more landslides, crumbling infrastructure, and rising death tolls until at least September 20. Stay safe, folks—keep an eye on local updates and avoid risky areas.
