Donald Trump and Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da SILVA made a friendly phone call on Monday, with Trump calling the conversation “very good.” In a post on Truth Social, the former U.S. president said he talked about the economy and trade between the two countries and that they hope to meet soon, either in Brazil or the United States.
The call follows the U.S. imposition of a 50 % tariff on Brazilian goods after Brazil sued former president Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump. It marks the first major talk since that trade hit spurred tensions between the two nations.
During the UN General Assembly in New York last month, Trump and Lula reportedly “had good chemistry.” Lula later replied on X, thanking Trump for the call and reminding audiences that the U.S. and Brazil are two of the world’s largest democracies and that Brazil is one of only three G20 members with whom the United States runs a trade surplus.
Lula used the opportunity to demand removal of the tariffs and hinted at a possible meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, which will take place in late October. He also said Brazil is fighting back over what it calls “tariff blackmail,” a tactic he believes is used to gain market share and interfere in domestic policy.
Brazil is a leading member of BRICS, and it has publicly opposed U.S. trade restrictions. In September, the group held an online summit to coordinate responses to U.S. tariffs. India, another BRICS member, also faces similar 50 % tariffs, though trade talks between the U.S. and India resumed after a brief pause, with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer meeting Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in New York on September 22.
