Former five-time Cong MLA Mainul Haque, who later joined Trinamool Congress, passes away

Kolkata, Nov 2 – Mainul Haque, a former five‑time Congress MLA who later joined the Trinamool Congress, died Sunday at the age of 63. The 63‑year‑old politician had been in a hospital in Kolkata after suffering a cardiac arrest in September. He passed away early Sunday morning.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to express his sorrow. In an X post, she wrote, “I express my deepest condolences on the demise of my political colleague Moinul Haque. He was a former legislator from Farakka constituency and has been working with us at the top level of the party for the past few years. My deepest sympathy goes to the family, friends and supporters.”

Haque began his career as a student leader and first entered politics with the Congress. In 1996, he won the Farakka Assembly seat in Murshidabad for the party, beating the then CPI‑M MLA Abu Hasnat Khan. He would go on to win the same seat five consecutive times on a Congress ticket and served as an opposition MLA in the West Bengal Assembly. During his time with the Congress, he joined the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and worked as an observer in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Haque lost the Farakka seat to Trinamool Congress’s Monirul Islam. That same year, he left Congress after writing to Sonia Gandhi and later joined the Trinamool Congress in the presence of party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He was appointed Vice‑President of the party’s state unit.

Abhishek Banerjee also posted his condolences on social media, noting Haque’s long service to Murshidabad and West Bengal politics.
