Canadian PM announces new support for Ukraine in meeting with Zelensky

Ottawa, Dec 28 (IANS) – The Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney, announced a fresh bundle of financial aid for Ukraine during a visit from President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to a release on the Governor’s official website, Canada has pledged 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (about $1.83 billion U.S.) to Ukraine. The package includes funds that will let the International Monetary Fund provide loans to Kyiv, as well as initiatives that suspend debt service and offer loan guarantees, the news agency Xinhua reported.

Carney and Zelensky held a high‑level meeting in Halifax, where they reviewed the latest developments in the ongoing peace talks. Carney reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering backing of Ukraine and noted that the country also took part in a call with European leaders aimed at bolstering joint efforts to secure Ukraine’s security and aid its recovery, the statement added.

“Canada has committed new support to Ukraine, not only to help end this war, but also to help the Ukrainian people recover and rebuild,” said Carney.

The Ukrainian president’s Canadian stop‑over came just before he headed to Florida to meet U.S. President Donald Trump, with the goal of pushing for an end to the conflict. Local media reports that Zelensky is set to discuss a 20‑point peace plan with Trump, likely at the Mar‑a‑Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

Carney and Zelensky talked again later in the week about progress on the negotiations. Zelensky said, as quoted by CBC News,

“In the coming days, much can be accomplished both bilaterally between Ukraine and the United States, as well as with our Coalition of the Willing partners.”

He added, “It is critical that we jointly and constructively bolster Ukraine’s ability to protect life, reinforce our front‑line positions and enhance the effectiveness of the negotiation process. Right now, it is Russia that is dragging its feet and trying to waste time,” he said.

Zelensky’s visit to Canada followed a phone call with Carney on Friday. A readout from the Governor’s office praised Zelensky for “his continued efforts to secure a just and lasting peace for the people of Ukraine, and the courage of the Ukrainian people as they face another winter of Russian aggression.”
