Mumbai, Nov. 15 – Legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray has recently spoken out about his story being copied for the Hollywood hit E.T. the Extra‑Terrestrial. A video that has resurfaced shows the late director explaining the plagiarism in his own words.
In the clip, Ray says, “Before E.T. was made, I had already written a science‑fiction screenplay called The Alien. Columbia Pictures was set to finance it. That’s why I spent five weeks in Hollywood. I worked through a middleman who misbehaved, and ultimately the idea was dropped.” The filmmaker reveals that his original concept was sidelined, but the essential plot was not.
Ray, born in Kolkata, grew up surrounded by music, literature, and art—factors that shaped his distinctive cinematic style. After studying at Visva‑Bharati University and working in advertising, he discovered his passion for film. Influenced by Italian Neorealism and the classic Bicycle Thieves, Ray went on to become one of the most celebrated directors worldwide.
His debut feature, Pather Panchali, launched on a shoestring budget and used non‑professional actors. The movie brought Indian cinema onto the global stage, earning acclaim at Cannes and spawning the famed Apu Trilogy that traces a boy’s journey from rural childhood to adulthood. Over a career that spanned more than 30 films—including Charulata, Mahanagar, Jalsaghar, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, and Bishal Ban—Ray’s work is noted for its humanism, quiet emotional depth, and meticulous craftsmanship.
Beyond directing, Ray was a writer, illustrator, composer, and designer. He created his own film scores and poster art, showcasing his multifaceted talent. For his lifelong contribution to cinema, he was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, and received an Honorary Oscar in 1992.
Satyajit Ray’s films continue to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike, standing as timeless explorations of human relationships and society. His legacy as a pioneer of Indian and world cinema endures.
