Indian Navy officers wrapped up a key meeting with Kenya’s top naval leader on Sunday, focusing on ways to deepen ties between the two countries. In Mombasa, the Senior Officer of India’s First Training Squadron (1TS) and commanding officers from visiting Indian ships sat down with Major General Paul Owuor Otieno, the Kenya Navy Commander. They discussed shared interests to boost maritime cooperation.
The Indian Navy shared the update on social media, highlighting a special deck reception aboard INS Shardul. This event celebrated the strong historical bonds and growing partnership in sea-based security between India and Kenya. As the post noted, it’s all about building “India-Kenya Bridges of Friendship.”
The visit kicked off on September 25 when four ships from the Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron docked at Mombasa port: INS Tir, INS Sujata, INS Shardul, and ICGS Sarathi. Kenya’s Navy, along with India’s Defence Advisor and Acting High Commissioner, gave them a warm welcome.
These ships are on a long-range training deployment across the South West Indian Ocean Region. Before reaching Kenya, they stopped in Seychelles, Mauritius, La Reunion, and Mozambique, according to India’s Ministry of Defence.
During their stay in Mombasa, crews from both navies plan plenty of joint activities. Expect professional exchanges like training sessions, a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX), and a Passage Exercise (PASSEX). On the social side, they’re organizing a joint yoga session, a combined performance by Indian and Kenyan Navy bands, and community outreach programs right in Mombasa.
India’s Ministry of Defence says the goal is to strengthen the maritime partnership under the “MAHASAGAR” initiative—short for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. As maritime neighbors, India and Kenya have built a solid relationship over the years. High-level visits keep happening, trade and investment are on the rise, and people-to-people connections run deep, per India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
