Sanchar Saathi helps recover over 50,000 stolen phones in Oct

New Delhi – The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) revealed this Tuesday that its digital‑safety program, Sanchar Saathi, has located more than 50,000 stolen or misplaced phones throughout India in October alone.

“This milestone shows a steadfast pledge to protect people’s digital belongings and to uphold confidence in tech‑driven governance. Nationwide recoveries have now topped 700 000 units,” a DoT spokesperson said.

Karnataka and Telangana led the charge, each surpassing 100 000 recoveries, followed by Maharashtra with over 80 000.

Monthly recoveries of lost or stolen mobiles jumped 47 % from June to October 2025, underscoring the system’s growing reach. On average, the platform recovers a handset every minute across the country.

At the heart of this progress lies an Indian‑built platform that merges automated workflows with instant device tracking. When a SIM card is inserted into a flagged phone, the technology dispatches alerts to the owner and the nearest police station, speeding up the return process and preventing misuse of blocked devices.

The success stems from tight cooperation between state and Union Territory police, the DoT’s Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU), and local task forces (LSAs), all working together to track and return devices efficiently.

Ongoing training sessions and collaborations with police forces at all levels have been key to sharpening field response and operational standards.

Citizens are encouraged to install the Sanchar Saathi app to report, block, and verify the authenticity of their new or second‑hand phones. The app also lets users flag possible scam calls or messages and check the contact details of trusted banks and financial institutions.
