Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – The Sabarimala gold plating controversy is heating up. CPI(M) Secretary MV Govindan said Thursday that whoever stole the gold will be found and punished without mercy. “If anyone has stolen even a single bit of gold belonging to Lord Ayyappa, the person will be caught,” he told . Govindan added that neither the CPI(M) party nor the Kerala government will shield any suspect.
Govindan also slammed the petition against the Global Ayyappa Summit that was brought to the High Court and Supreme Court. He said the court‑appointed investigation team will submit its report in two weeks. “The investigation will reveal who was behind the sabotage attempts after the courts rejected the petitions,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader criticized the opposition parties, the Congress‑led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the BJP, for using slogans against Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan and the Devaswom Board. “Opposition groups are attacking Vasavan for political reasons,” Govindan said. He warned that the CPI(M) and the government will not back down under political pressure.
Earlier, Kerala Devaswom Minister V. Sivankutty explained that the Devaswom Board runs independently, under the oversight of the High Court. He assured strict action against anyone found responsible for wrongdoing. Sivankutty also noted that a senior officer appointed by the High Court monitors daily affairs at Sabarimala and reports directly to the court.
The dispute stems from the difficulty investigators faced in locating key records linked to 30.3 kg of gold and 1,900 kg of copper that industrialist Vijay Mallya donated in 1998 for cladding the sanctum and carvings at the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. The missing gold plating has sparked accusations, investigations, and heated political debate across Kerala.
