A 10‑year‑old girl in Manila has died after a blaze tore through a crowded neighborhood, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said on Friday. The fire broke out in Pasay City before midnight, and the girl was sleeping inside her house when flames engulfed the roof. Firefighters reached her body under the charred roof early Saturday, but she could not be revived.
The mother of the victim was running a nearby food stall when the fire erupted. The BFP had no update on the father’s whereabouts that night. A 44‑year‑old man nearby was also injured, suffering a shoulder laceration.
The fire spread fast because Panay’s houses are built of light materials and the streets are narrow. It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the flames under control. An investigation is now underway to determine what sparked the inferno. The residents who were forced to leave their homes are staying in a local school while the incident is examined.
The tragedy in Pasay City adds to a string of deadly fires in the Philippine capital. Just a few days earlier, on Tuesday, a fire in Quezon City killed three children—aged 10, 7 and 5—who were asleep in their bedroom. Their parents were away and left the children in the care of their grandmother, who managed to escape but could not save her grandchildren. The fire spread quickly and took nearly three hours to extinguish, destroying more than ten houses in a densely packed area.
The BFP has already reported a similar blaze in May that killed two people—cousins trapped in their home—and left two others injured. That fire also raged through closely built houses, damaged a nearby school building, and destroyed several vehicles. Both incidents highlight the danger posed by poorly constructed housing and inadequate fire safety measures in Manila’s crowded districts.
