A boat carrying almost 100 undocumented migrants capsized just outside the Malaysia‑Thailand maritime border, killing at least one person and rescuing six, police in Kuala Lumpur confirmed on Sunday. The tragedy happened in the waters close to Kedah state, where the police chief, Adzli Abu Shah, said the vessel was part of a larger operation that had originally brought about 300 migrants onto a bigger ship one month earlier.
When the large vessel approached the Malaysian border, the syndicate broke the crowd into three smaller boats, hoping to stay under the radar of authorities. The biggest of those boats, carrying an estimated 100 people, sank three days before the news broke. The fates of the other two boats remain unknown as Malaysian marine police and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency launch a search and rescue mission.
In a similar vein, Greece reported several migrant boat incidents this month. On October 27, a boat sank off the island of Lesvos, killing four and leaving seven survivors. Strong winds made the rescue tough, and the rescue crew struggled to communicate with the Sudanese migrants, who do not speak English. Greece, which has become a major entry point for refugees into the European Union since 2015, has watched many such tragedies over the years.
Earlier, on October 17, Greek authorities said two people died and ten were injured after a boat carrying migrants crashed onto rocks off Chios. The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed the tragedy involved 29 people on board, but the nationalities of the victims and survivors have yet to be released.
These incidents highlight the danger many undocumented migrants face when trying to cross international waters. Search and rescue teams continue to operate in both Malaysia and Greek waters, hoping to pull more lives back from the sea.
