A devastating blast tore through a military explosives plant southwest of Nashville on Friday morning, shaking the local community.
The explosion tore apart the facility owned by Accurate Energetic Systems, a company that makes military explosives, and left a half‑square‑mile of wreckage in its wake.
According to Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, 19 people are confirmed dead or missing. “We’re missing 19 souls,” he said in a news conference, describing the scene as “one of the most devastating” he’s ever seen. The blast struck around 7:45 a.m. local time (12:45 GMT), and officials confirmed that several people had died.
Hickman County Mayor Jim Bates told ABC News that at least 13 people were unaccounted for, matching the sheriff’s report. Emergency officials are working hard to find survivors and gather evidence.
Accurate Energetic Systems is a military‑explosives firm located just outside Nashville, but officials say they could not yet verify the full extent of damage or injuries. Families are in shock, and the county is dealing with a “gauntlet of emotion,” said Sheriff Davis.
Now, state and federal agencies are on the scene. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have all arrived. Authorities are holding back from the immediate blast area because of a risk of secondary explosions.
Investigators say it may take time to determine exactly what caused the blast. In the meantime, rescuers remain on standby, and the community continues to wait for answers.
