India fired back hard at Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. During the 80th UNGA session in New York, Sharif’s remarks drew sharp criticism from India, which accused him of praising terrorism and twisting the truth about the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
Petal Gahlot, First Secretary in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, didn’t hold back. Right after Sharif spoke, she took the floor and called his address “absurd theatrics.” Gahlot pointed out how terrorism seems baked into Pakistan’s foreign policy. “This Assembly witnessed absurd theatrics this morning from the Prime Minister of Pakistan, who once again glorified terrorism,” she said.
She spotlighted India’s strong response to terror threats, especially Operation Sindoor. Indian forces struck terrorist hideouts in Bahawalpur and Muridke, deep inside Pakistan. Gahlot shared striking images from the operation, showing terrorists taken out by Indian troops. “A picture speaks a thousand words, and we saw many pictures of terrorists slain… by Indian forces during Operation Sindoor,” she noted. She questioned Pakistan’s leadership too: When top military and civilian officials openly honor these terrorists, it raises big doubts about their priorities.
Gahlot also shot down Sharif’s version of the recent India-Pakistan conflict, labeling it “bizarre” and off-base. According to her, Pakistan kept threatening more attacks on India until May 9. But the very next day, on May 10, their military reached out directly, begging for a pause in the fighting. “The record on this matter is clear,” she said firmly.
India stands firm on its counter-terrorism efforts. Gahlot stressed that Pakistan has a history of launching terrorist attacks on innocent civilians in India. “We have exercised the right to defend our people… and brought the organizers and perpetrators to justice,” she explained. This underscores India’s commitment to self-defense amid the India-Pakistan conflict.
Sharif talked about wanting peace with India in his speech, but Gahlot laid out clear steps if he’s serious. “Pakistan must immediately shut down all terrorist camps and hand over to us the terrorists wanted in India,” she demanded.
She wrapped up by calling out the irony in Pakistan’s stance. A nation struggling with its own issues of hate and intolerance shouldn’t lecture the world on matters of faith, Gahlot argued.
Sharif’s address also stirred controversy by giving credit to former US President Donald Trump for stopping what he called a potential war between India and Pakistan. India’s response highlights the deep-rooted issues in South Asia’s security landscape, from terrorism to diplomatic standoffs at forums like the UNGA.
