Nepal’s new Prime Minister Sushila Karki is all set to step into her official role at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu this Sunday at 11 am. This comes after intense protests rocked the Himalayan nation, shaking up its politics in a big way.
The 73-year-old former Chief Justice got sworn in as interim Prime Minister on Friday, thanks to massive Gen Z-led protests. Young people hit the streets over frustrations with political gridlock, corruption, economic gaps, and a recent social media ban that sparked the unrest. Protesters even pushed for her appointment, praising her honesty and independence. This led to the resignation of previous PM KP Sharma Oli amid the chaos.
Karki’s pick feels like a breath of fresh air in Nepal’s divided politics. Gen Z leaders ran an online vote on Discord, where she topped the list as the top choice—not just from the youth but also from old-school politicians craving stability during this turmoil.
As she gears up, Karki is chatting with trusted advisors and Gen Z reps to build her team. According to The Kathmandu Post, she’ll kick off deep talks on Sunday morning to shape her Cabinet. Even though she oversees all 25 ministries, she’s eyeing a lean setup with just 15 ministers or fewer. This matches demands from civil society and the protesters pushing for real change.
Some big names in the mix include legal whiz Om Prakash Aryal, ex-army man Balananda Sharma, retired judge Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Madhav Sundar Khadka, Asheem Man Singh Basnyat, and power sector expert Kulman Ghising. From the medical world, doctors like Bhagawan Koirala, Sanduk Ruit, Jagadish Agrawal, and Pukar Chandra Shrestha are also on the radar.
Meanwhile, Gen Z folks are buzzing on Discord and other spots, suggesting candidates who fit their reform goals. If everyone agrees, the new Cabinet could take oaths as soon as Sunday night. But talks might stretch to Monday if needed, reports The Kathmandu Post.
In other big news, Nepal’s Parliament got dissolved on Friday, right after Karki’s swearing-in. Fresh elections are now locked in for March 5, 2026. The President’s office confirmed the move came from Karki’s first Cabinet meeting at 11 pm local time. This sets up a six-month interim government to guide the country toward the polls and tackle the ongoing Nepal political crisis.
