Kabul – Afghan police seized a drug smuggler and confiscated crystal methamphetamine in a fresh operation in northern Takhar province, officials said Friday.
The suspect was caught while trying to transport the drug and chemicals used to make heroin to Taluqan, the provincial capital, where he planned to sell them. According to provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir, the man is now in custody and under investigation.
This takhar raid is part of a broader push by Afghan authorities to curb illicit drug trade. In the past week, Islamabad‑connected forces reported several major seizures across the country.
On November 9, police in western Nimroz seized 170 kg of opium poppy and arrested two smugglers in the Zanjer Sharqi area on the Zaranj‑Delaram highway. The same day, officials in eastern Ghazni found 225 kg of opium hidden in a car’s secret compartment in Muqar district. The driver fled, but police are searching for the owner.
Mid‑week, a drug‑processing lab was destroyed in Paktia, and early this month, counter‑narcotics teams eliminated 400 acres of illegal poppy fields in Badakhshan. Spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar said the operation wiped out crops across Baharak, Jurm, Shuhada and Darayem districts, vowing that poppy cultivation would not be tolerated.
The Afghan government tightened its drug‑busting campaign in April 2022 with a nationwide ban on illegal crops such as poppy and hashish. Recent raids across Takhar, Nimroz, Ghazni, Paktia, and Badakhshan show the strategy is gaining momentum.
These actions demonstrate the country’s growing resolve to block drug smuggling, stop heroin production, and protect communities from the devastating impacts of narcotics.
