Kabul, Nov 16 – Afghan police have arrested suspects and seized a large stash of weapons in several provinces, says the forces’ spokesman.
In Helmand province’s Gereshk district, provincial police found six Kalashnikov rifles, an M16, a shotgun, three hand grenades, a mortar launcher and hundreds of bullets and cartridges. Mullah Ezatullah Haqqani said police also took an individual suspected of helping the smuggling operation into custody. The detainee is now in police custody for further investigation.
Another raid on Nov 9 in eastern Panjshir caught a smuggler at a checkpoint. Authorities seized three AK‑47s, a pistol, binoculars, hundreds of rounds and other military gear. Police officer Haqmal Saad urged locals to help police track illegal arms, stressing that the province will not allow weapons to circulate.
Seven days earlier, Kandahar police arrested three more smugglers in a similar operation. On Nov 6, Daykundi police recovered seven firearms and ammunition in a home in Pato district—a mix of Kalashnikovs, a rocket‑launcher, a machine gun, two hunting rifles and hundreds of bullets. Police also took a suspect who was holding the weapons illegally.
These actions are part of the Afghan government’s push to remove illegal weapons from the public after the war. Police are urging citizens not to keep or carry arms without permission.
