Nuapada bypoll: BJD flags security concern ahead of Naveen Patnaik’s campaign

In Bhubaneswar on Thursday, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) asked the Odisha Chief Electoral Officer, R.S. Gopalan, to provide extra security for former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as he heads to a series of campaign events in the state.

The BJD warned that some BJP ministers and workers might try to stir up trouble in attendance. Delegates led by Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo and senior party member Lenin Mohanty submitted a formal request to the CEO. They outlined fears of stone‑pelting and other violence during Patnaik’s visits to Nuapada, Khariar and a public meeting in Parkod on Friday.

In addition to safety concerns, BJD officials lodged a complaint about traffic jams caused by a BJP campaign stage erected by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the Nuapada Assembly constituency. The stage blocked the main road in Komna block, forcing residents, students and traders to find alternative routes. The delegation asked the CEO to clear the obstruction, enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and the Model Code of Conduct, and keep public roads open for commuters.

These requests come as Odisha’s election campaigns intensify. BJD wants to ensure Patnaik’s tour proceeds smoothly while keeping voters’ daily life undisturbed.
