In Peshawar on Saturday, Pakistan’s top military media officer, Lieutenant‑General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, took to the podium to explain why the country has seen an uptick in suicide attacks over the last two years. He said that almost 30 suicide bombers who struck Pakistani targets were Afghan nationals recruited to carry out these attacks. The DG ISPR (Director General – Inter‑Services Public Relations) warned that Afghan territory is being used as a launch pad for terrorism against Pakistan.
During the press conference at the Corps Headquarters, Chaudhry spoke about a “terror‑crime nexus” that he believes fuels the violence. He said the government must not blame its own security forces for the attacks while pointing fingers at political and criminal actors. “The rampant surge of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is a result of a political‑criminal alliance,” he said, stressing that the moves of these groups threaten the rights and future of KP’s people.
The officer added that some political forces are spreading a false narrative that hurts public confidence and disrespects the sacrifices of Pakistan’s security forces. He described this misinformation campaign as a deliberate effort by the political‑criminal nexus to undermine the nation’s anti‑terror operations.
Highlighting the root causes, Chaudhry called out several key challenges: the slow rollout of the National Action Plan, the politicisation of terrorism which confuses the public, and external encouragement that keeps terrorists stocked with modern weapons and safe havens, especially in Afghanistan. He warned that those who provide such support are directly contributing to the violence that grieves Pakistan.
“The military will not allow anyone to barter away the rights of the people of KP for personal gain,” he emphasized, noting that while the political alliances behind terrorism appear weaker in Sindh and Punjab, they remain active in KP.
The lieutenant‑general’s remarks underline the Afghan link to Pakistan’s recent bombing spree and point to a wider network that combines political influence, criminal profiteering, and international smuggling of arms. As the country continues to fight terrorism, the DG ISPR urges a focused effort on the National Action Plan and a crackdown on the political‑criminal groups that fuel the violence.
