Human rights activist Sammi Deen Baloch is sounding the alarm over the worsening health of Bebigar Baloch, a wheelchair-bound leader in the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). Authorities in Pakistan have held him in custody for six months without any formal charges, and Sammi says they’re denying him critical medical help.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Sammi shared that Bebigar, who lives with a permanent disability, now faces life-threatening conditions. Doctors urge immediate surgery, but prison officials and judges aren’t stepping in. “Keeping him in jail like this amounts to a slow death sentence,” she warned.
Sammi blasted Pakistan’s crackdown on political voices in Balochistan. “The state is so obsessed with silencing dissent that it can’t even tell the difference between ordinary people and those with disabilities,” she said. She argued that jailing peaceful activists who fight for rights and challenge the government shows a dangerous delusion—one that spares no one, not even the physically vulnerable.
Her call to action targets the world: Sammi urged international human rights groups, civil society, and activists who stand for justice to speak out. She wants immediate pressure to get Bebigar transferred to a hospital for treatment and to drop the unfounded accusations against him.
This case highlights the deep human rights crisis in Balochistan, where enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests plague the region. Pakistani forces often target political activists, protesters, and dissenters, holding them without fair trials or charges. Such repression stirs ongoing unrest and violates fundamental rights for many in the area.
