Islamabad, Pakistan – A young man from Balochistan, Ashfaq Mushtaq, has disappeared after Pakistani security forces raided his home. The incident adds to a long list of enforced disappearances that have plagued the region for years.
Ashfaq’s family says soldiers and local militia entered his house in early October and took him away without showing any legal papers. They have not received any information about his whereabouts, leaving them frightened that he might be held or harmed like many other Baloch men before him.
This is not the first tragedy in the Mushtaq family. In May, police and military troops reportedly stormed the house of Ashfaq’s uncle, Lala Lateef, and shot him dead. Earlier, in March, Ashfaq’s cousin Saif Lateef and eight other relatives were seized in Mashkai. Their bodies were later found in a remote area, evidence of the violent crackdown on Baloch communities.
People in Balochistan say that being Baloch has become a punishable identity. Thousands of men, women, and children have vanished, leaving families in pain and uncertainty. The military’s actions create an atmosphere of fear, where dissent, activism, or simply cultural pride can lead to death or disappearance.
International human‑rights groups call for an end to the crackdown and demand that the Pakistani government provide information about missing people, including Ashfaq Mushtaq. The world must pay attention to the ongoing human‑rights abuses in Balochistan and push for justice and accountability.
