China detains dozens of underground church pastors in crackdown

China detains dozens of underground church pastors in a fresh crackdown on religious groups. In the past week, authorities in several provinces—most notably Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangdong—arrested more than 30 clergy members who head local Baptist, Pentecostal, and other Protestant congregations that operate without official approval. The government says the arrests target “illegal religious activities” that threaten social stability.

The crackdown follows a long‑running Chinese policy that permits only state‑licensed churches. These official churches often cooperate with the Three‑Grapes Church, the state‑run body that monitors Christian practice. Underground pastors, however, meet secretly and refuse to register with the authorities. They have been subject to continual surveillance, house‑searches, and intimidation for years. According to reports from local communities, the past month saw a wave of sudden detentions, with officials arriving at homes without prior notice and carrying out “spiritual crisis’ interrogations.”

Official statements from the Ministry of Public Security explain that the detained clergy allegedly engaged in “illegal worship” and “spreading extremist beliefs.” The government claims that the underground movement attempts to “disrupt peace and order.” No formal charges have been announced yet, and the courts have not released any indictments. In a brief statement, a spokesperson said the actions “serve to preserve the integrity of the nation and protect public safety.”

Human rights groups have sharply criticized the arrests. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said the crackdown violates “freedom of religion and belief” stipulated in international treaties. The U.S. State Department’s Office of the Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief urged China to “respect the fundamental human right to worship.” A coalition of faith‑based NGOs, including the Open Doors organization, called the detentions “a clear attack on religious freedom in China.”

For many believers, the arrests signal the latest round of pressure on independent faith communities. Pastors who were taken away often face extended detentions, and their congregations are forced to break up or operate clandestinely. One Texas‑based pastor interviewed by an international radio station said, “The underground church is being squeezed from every side. We are now living in fear of the next raid.”

The Chinese government has also monitored religious gatherings of Tibetan Buddhists, Uyghur Muslims, and Falun Gong practitioners, but the international spotlight on Christians remains intense because of the size of China’s global Christian diaspora. Religious leaders abroad have pressed the Chinese authorities to allow greater autonomy for domestic churches and to lift the blanket restrictions that compel underground churches to hide.

As the situation develops, faith communities and human rights advocates expect China to either ban the underground movement outright or force it underground further. Meanwhile, international observers will watch to see if the government’s policy extends beyond clergy to lay members and young believers. This latest wave of arrests underscores a broader struggle over civil liberties and underscores the intense debate over religious freedom versus state control in China.
