Lobsang Sangay, the former Tibetan Prime Minister in exile, has a stark warning for the world: China’s grip is tightening everywhere, and they’re eyeing control over the Dalai Lama’s successor like never before.
Speaking to in New Delhi, Sangay explained how the choice of the next Dalai Lama carries huge geopolitical weight for India, neighboring countries, and the globe. “China wants to control everything,” he said. “We’ve seen their so-called world order up close as Tibetans—it’s all about dominance, just like they’re doing with the Dalai Lama issue.”
Sangay painted a vivid picture of China’s tactics. He pointed to Xinjiang, where authorities reject local imams and impose their own picks. “They control Tibetan lamas, priests, and even bishops,” he added. “You might think you can negotiate with China, but their system is relentless. They see religion as poison, yet they crave control over it.”
This isn’t just about Tibet, Sangay warned. China could extend its influence to Buddhist leaders in Southeast Asia—think Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. “If they become the top global power, they’ll meddle in your politics, economy, and spiritual affairs,” he said. “Allowing them to pick the Dalai Lama opens the door for that dangerous game.”
He criticized China’s disrespect for Buddhism, calling their moves an attempt to dilute its essence. Take the fake Panchen Lama, Sangay said: “They installed him but kept him in Beijing instead of a Tibetan monastery. He lost all credibility. They control the office while destroying its value.”
Sangay even joked in exaggeration: “Next, they’ll say, ‘This isn’t the real Shankaracharya—we pick the one we like!'”
He drew parallels to China’s deal with the Vatican. Back in 2018, they signed a secret agreement on appointing bishops in China, which the Vatican endorsed. “Who knows? Soon they could influence cardinals, even the Pope,” Sangay cautioned. “This is the Chinese world order we must watch out for—their tentacles reach everywhere.”
For Sangay, China’s push to select the next Dalai Lama isn’t a local matter; it’s a global red flag. The Chinese government insists on using a “golden urn” method with their approval, but the current 14th Dalai Lama and Tibetans reject this outright. The Dalai Lama has said his successor will be born in a free country, far from China’s reach.
As tensions rise over Tibet’s future and China’s expanding influence, Sangay’s words highlight why the world needs to stay vigilant.
