Kabir Bedi, the well‑known Indian actor, used Remembrance Sunday to honor his grandfather and the legacy of Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars.
On Sunday, the 79‑year‑old actor posted a photo of himself portraying Major Hari Singh in Steve Purewal’s upcoming Canadian film Promises. The movie is a tribute to the four million Indian soldiers who served with the British Indian Army during World War I and World War II. Bedi recounted that his maternal grandfather, Frank Houlston, died in France in 1915, an event that deeply affected his mother, Freda Bedi. The tragedy later shaped her spiritual journey, making her the highest‑ranked Buddhist nun before she passed away.
Bedi wrote, “On Remembrance Sunday I salute the valor of the 4 million Indian soldiers who fought in World War I and II. Here’s a photo of me as Major Hari Singh in Promises, a Canadian film dedicated to their memory, set to release soon. Remembering all the fallen and injured – lest we forget.”
Promises will see Bedi play Havildar Hari Singh, a World War II Sikh soldier who fought alongside Canadian troops. The film premiered in April 2025 during Sikh Heritage Month celebrations in Surrey, British Columbia.
Bedi’s tribute highlighted the bravery of Indian troops in global conflicts and reminded viewers of the personal sacrifices that shaped lives across generations. It serves as a call to remember the fallen and honor the shared history between India and the West.
