Cong MP Tharoor, MEA Secy (West) hold talks on strengthening India-Europe ties

Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, met with Sibi George, the newly‑appointed Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. The visit, part of routine diplomacy, focused on strengthening ties between India and Europe.

In a brief statement on X, Tharoor shared that the MEA Secretary had just finished a successful posting in Japan. He said the conversation emphasized the importance of deepening India‑EU relations amid growing global uncertainty.

India and the European Union have shared values such as democracy, rule of law and a rules‑based world order. Their partnership covers trade, investment, climate action, science and technology, digital connectivity and agriculture. The two sides began formal diplomatic relations in 1962, and a Joint Political Statement in 1993 and a Cooperation Agreement in 1994 helped boost the relationship.

Recent high‑level meetings illustrate the active dialogue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met European leaders at the G20 Rio Summit in November 2024 and will soon call President Antonio Costa. Modi also met European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at G20 and G‑7 gatherings, and at COP28 in Dubai.

Regular talks happen at ministerial and commissioner levels, so India and the EU continue to build a strong partnership on critical global issues.
