Danish Siddiqui Foundation pleads for govt’s help in pursuing justice for photographer from Taliban

The Danish Siddiqui Foundation, the group that represents the late Indian journalist, asked Indian officials on Saturday to step in and help pursue justice for his killing by the Taliban.

The foundation said that the fact the Afghan Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, is visiting India can be used to make that appeal. It wants the government to work with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the United Nations Human Rights Council. The goal is to press the Taliban to cooperate with investigations and to reinforce its international obligations.

Siddiqui, a Pulitzer‑winning photojournalist, was shot and beaten to death in Afghanistan in 2021 while covering a clash between Afghan special forces and Taliban insurgents. He was captured after an attack on the mosque that served as a field hospital. His body was later mutilated, and investigators found 12 bullet holes, a clear sign of torture.

The foundation’s post on X repeated that its petition to the ICC—filing against Taliban leaders such as Supreme Commander Hibatullah Akhundzada and Deputy Head Hassan Akhund—remains in force. They also highlighted that a joint investigation led by international bodies is essential for accountability.

India’s response is still pending, but the foundation hopes the Afghan minister’s visit will create a window for diplomatic pressure. If the government can mobilize diplomatic contacts, there is a chance the case could move forward at the ICC or UN Human Rights Council.

The case has drawn attention worldwide, especially after the posthumous Pulitzer awarded to Siddiqui in 2022 for his images of the COVID‑19 pandemic. His death is a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face when covering conflicts.

As the Afghan foreign minister meets with Indian officials, the Danish Siddiqui Foundation is calling on the world to demand truth and justice for this tragic loss. Their aim: to hold the Taliban accountable and prevent future crimes against reporters.
