Sergio Gor arrived in New Delhi early Saturday to begin his role as the United States’ new ambassador to India. He started the day by meeting senior Indian officials and ending with a brief call and later a face‑to‑face with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gor said the first meetings were “a great series of talks” with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The focus was on deepening cooperation in defence, trade, technology and, notably, the supply of critical minerals that both countries need for growth and security.
“India and the United States have a robust and evolving partnership,” Gor told reporters, adding that leaders at both sides should keep the conversation going. “I am optimistic about what we can achieve together,” he said.
The ambassador highlighted the strong personal ties between then-U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Modi, calling it a “unique strength” that helped move the relationship forward. He recalled a recent phone call with Trump before arriving in New Delhi and promised that talks would continue in the coming months.
During a Senate confirmation hearing in September, Gor described India as “a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He praised India’s geographic position, economic growth and military capabilities as key for regional stability and prosperity.
The U.S. Embassy in India posted on X (formerly Twitter) that it was “excited to welcome Ambassador Sergio Gor to India.” The embassy said Gor will meet with India’s government counterparts to further strengthen their ambitious strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous relationship.
With the new ambassador on the ground, the United States and India are set to build on an already strong partnership. The focus will stay on practical areas—defence collaboration, trade deals, technology exchange and securing critical minerals—while keeping the leadership dialogue active.
As both countries look ahead, the new ambassador’s arrival signals a fresh push to deepen ties, clear trade barriers, and advance shared security interests across the Indo‑Pacific region.
