Egg-Throwing Protest Targets Bangladesh Official in London
In a tense moment outside a London event, protesters hurled eggs at vehicles from the Bangladesh High Commission as Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam wrapped up a program at SOAS University. The event marked the first anniversary of Bangladesh’s July uprising, and the demonstrators even tried to block the cars’ path for a short time.
London’s Metropolitan Police stepped in quickly to handle the situation. Reports from Friday confirm that Alam wasn’t in any of the targeted vehicles, so he stayed safe. The Bangladesh High Commission shared that police stayed in close touch and promised full protection for Alam during his UK visit.
This London incident comes just weeks after a similar attack on Alam in New York. While he attended an event at the Bangladesh Consulate General, angry protesters threw eggs—and some say bottles too—smashing glass doors in the process. The consulate complained to local authorities, including the State Department’s office, demanding action against the violence.
Bangladesh’s interim government didn’t hold back in their response. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam slammed the "attempted harassment" in a strong statement. "Our government, the people of Bangladesh, and the authorities in both host countries stand for civilized values," he said. "These thugs live in a world of barbarism and bullying."
The government stressed that this kind of aggression has no place in any democracy. "We value argument over aggression and debate over thuggery," their statement read. "Violence isn’t protest, and intimidation isn’t free speech. This applies just as much in London as it did in New York."
Islami Chhatra Shibir Scores Big Win in DUCSU Elections
Shifting gears back home, Bangladeshi students’ politics heated up with a major victory for Islami Chhatra Shibir in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. Backed by the group under the Oikkoboddho Shikkharthi Jote banner, their candidates grabbed nine out of 15 key posts, including Vice President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary.
For Vice President, Shibir leader Abu Shadik Kayem dominated with 14,042 votes. His main rival from the BNP student wing, Abidul Islam Khan, trailed far behind with 5,708 votes.
Remember, Shibir made a bold public comeback in September last year after the Awami League government’s fall during the July mass uprising. In under a year, they’ve now swept the DUCSU polls, showing their growing influence in Bangladesh student politics.
