A 4.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar on Tuesday, shaking the ground in a region already on edge from recent tremors. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the quake hit at 6:10 a.m. IST, centered at latitude 24.73 N and longitude 94.63 E, just 15 kilometers deep.
That shallow depth makes this Myanmar earthquake particularly worrisome. Seismic experts note that quakes this close to the surface send stronger waves rippling through the earth, leading to more intense shaking, potential structural damage, and higher risks to people. Aftershocks could follow, keeping residents alert.
Just a day earlier, on Monday, a smaller 3.2 magnitude quake struck the same area at a deeper 60 kilometers underground. It occurred around 1:48 p.m. IST, at coordinates 24.52 N and 94.69 E, according to NCS updates on X.
Myanmar’s seismic activity remains a hot topic, especially after devastating quakes in March—measuring 7.7 and 6.4 magnitudes—that left thousands displaced in central areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms about surging health risks there, including tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and outbreaks of water- and vector-borne diseases like malaria or cholera, hitting vulnerable communities hard.
The country sits in a geologically active zone, squeezed between the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma tectonic plates. A massive 1,400-kilometer transform fault slices through Myanmar, linking the Andaman spreading center to the northern Sagaing Fault collision zone. This setup amps up earthquake hazards, especially along the Sagaing Fault, which threatens major cities like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon. These spots house nearly half of Myanmar’s population.
Even Yangon, a bustling hub away from the fault line, isn’t immune. Back in 1903, a 7.0 magnitude quake in Bago sent severe tremors all the way to the city, causing widespread chaos. With Myanmar’s long coastline also at risk for tsunamis from big quakes, experts urge ongoing preparedness in this earthquake-prone nation.
