An early‑evening tremor rattled Pakistan on Saturday, October 11. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded a 5.0‑magnitude quake at a shallow depth of just 10 km. The shake happened around 8:24 p.m. local time near latitude 31.19 N and longitude 71.04 E, putting the country at risk for aftershocks because shallow quakes transmit powerful seismic waves right at the surface.
Earlier in the week, on October 5, a 4.6‑magnitude tremor struck the same country at the same depth (10 km) at latitude 30.33 N and longitude 66.43 E. The NCS quickly posted details on X (formerly Twitter), giving the exact coordinates and depth for both events.
Shallow earthquakes tend to be more dangerous than deep ones. With less distance for the shockwaves to travel, the ground shakes harder, and the risk to buildings and people rises sharply. Pakistan sits on a dynamic crossroads of tectonic plates, making it one of the world’s most seismically active nations.
The collision between the Eurasian and Arabian plates creates several major faults that crisscross the country. Provinces like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit‑Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab and Sindh sit on the north‑western edge of the Indian plate. This geological setup fuels frequent earthquake activity across the region.
Balochistan’s history of powerful quakes is starkly remembered for the 1945 event that jolted the area with an 8.1 magnitude—Pakistan’s largest recorded earthquake. That day’s shock inflicted widespread damage and underscored how serious a seismic crisis can be for the country.
Residents and authorities remain on alert for any aftershocks. The National Centre for Seismology will continue to monitor the region and provide updates, especially as the nation recovers from the latest tremors and prepares for potential future quakes.
